Molecular Science for Better Healthcare
The Biochemistry Department explores the chemical basis of life, equipping students with knowledge about metabolism, enzymology, and molecular diagnostics. Biochemistry focuses on the molecular basis of life, including metabolism, enzymology, and genetics. It plays a crucial role in understanding diseases at a cellular level and developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
Faculty and students engage in diverse research endeavors, aiming to elucidate biochemical pathways and their implications in various diseases, thereby contributing to advancements in medical science
Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, the department supports both educational and diagnostic functions, ensuring accurate test results and fostering a conducive learning environment.
In summary, the Department of Biochemistry at BJGMC, Pune, is committed to excellence in medical education, diagnostic services, and research, significantly contributing to the institution’s mission of enhancing healthcare delivery and scientific understanding.

- To prepare health care professionals with a sound knowledge in Medical Biochemistry which they can apply in their clinical practice & research.
- To provide an atmosphere for learning basic practical skills of biochemical investigations in order to support clinical diagnosis and management of medical disorders in the community.
- To provide medical laboratory testing services in accordance with the applicable standards to satisfy the expectation of patients and physicians.

- Nutritional Assays – Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12
- Inflammatory markers – Procalcitonin, IL-6
These tests are being carried out in a fully automated chemistry analyser, XL-640 (Erba Transasia), Cobas e411, Beckmann Coulter, Cobas 6000, ABG analyser Cobas 221, HPLC (BioRad D10).
Expansion plan for the future:
The department intends to provide short term training courses of Quality management in Clinical Biochemistry to medical laboratory professionals. In order to promote an atmosphere of continuous learning, the Department will conduct symposia, workshops and conferences at national and global scale.

Research of Biochemistry
- The department of Biochemistry is involved in interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment focused to understand the biochemical aspects in relation to molecular and clinical aspects of diseases and to develop interventional therapies. Department is also working in the direction to establish specialized centre for screening of genetic inborn errors of metabolism and develop dedicated molecular biology laboratories. Faculties are also working to initiate various national and international collaborative research projects in the department.
